Mundell Engineering offers the Salsnes Filter for advanced primary treatment, sludge dewatering, and combined sewer overflow (CSO) applications. The Salsnes Filter cost-effectively reduces the organic load on downstream processes, which translates into more treatment capacity in existing plants and smaller downstream processes in new plants (with the associated cost savings). The Salsnes filter solves the problem of overloaded biological or chemical treatment plants, both Municipal and Industrial. The Salsnes filter is a modular and scalable system with no limitations in hydraulic design. The Salsnes filter can remove solids as fine as 15 – 30 micron while simultaneously reducing the volume of sludge generated by means of a compact integrated dewatering system.
The Salsnes Filter was designed to relieve primary treatment burden at municipal and industrial plants in a very small footprint, saving major infrastructure investment and space. The filter operates utilizing a continuous fine screen, which removes solids as fine as 10-30 micron. The result is efficient, high percentage removal of TSS and particulate BOD5 in wastewater. For most municipal applications, this means removal of 40-70% TSS and up to 30% BOD5.
Removal of solids is facilitated utilizing a continuous-loop fine mesh screen . Solids collect on the screen forming a mat of sludge. As the screen rotates, a patented air-blower system forces the retained screenings off the mesh and into the screenings hopper, virtually eliminating solids carry-over. Additionally, a patented hot water wash periodically removes any grease or other solids that may adhere to the mesh. An auger press dewaters the collected screenings while the filter effluent exits the unit.
The innovative technology behind the Salsnes Filter provides flexibility in waste water treatment and reclamation plants. Screenings dewatering and odor containment are integrated parts of the machine, and the filters are compact, completely covered systems that are easy to maintain. The Salsnes Filter can be applied at municipal and industrial waste water treatment plants to filter unwanted organic and inorganic solids from the waste water flow. When compared with sedimentation as primary sewage treatment, the Salsnes Filter typically requires less than 50% of the capital investment and less than 10% of the footprint.
The Salsnes Filter is pre-engineered, very compact, and easy to install and operate. Due to its modularity, it can be easily combined with existing technology and used in any size of facility. With over 240 installations as of December 2007, the filter has been used effectively in the following applications:
- Municipal Primary Wastewater Treatment
- Membrane pre-treatment
- Centrifuge pre-treatment
- Dissolved air flotation pre-treatment (DAF)
- Food / Dairy Industry
- Pulp and Paper Industry
- Manure Dewatering
- Tanneries
Volute Sludge Dewatering and Thickening
Volute is structured with a filter element that consists of two types of Rings: a Fixed Ring and a Moving Ring; and a screw that thrusts the filter element and transfers and pressurizes the sludge. The gaps between the Rings and the screw pitch are designed to gradually get narrower towards the direction of sludge cake outlet and the inner pressure of the filter element increases due to the volume compression effect, which thickens and dewaters the sludge.
Two types of core units
Volute is the standard technology that brought innovation to the industry of dewatering equipment in 1991. The self-cleaning mechanism that dewaters and prevents clogging has enabled continuous dewatering for a long period of time.
Advanced Volute inherits the merits of the standard Volute technology and has evolved further. Advanced Volute technology widens the range of applications in terms of sludge types, reduces the performance degradation caused by aging, and delivers stable performance over a longer period of time. In addition, the amount of components that needed to be regularly replaced is reduced sharply, reducing the total lifetime cost.
